Foot Locker – The Netherlands

EUROPEAN SERVICE CENTER
Heijen, The Netherlands

Foot Locker, Inc. is a worldwide leader in athletic footwear and apparel sales. Based in New York City, the company operates roughly 4000 retail stores in some 20 countries in North America, Europe, and Australia, under the brand names Foot Locker, Footaction, Lady Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, and Champs Sports.

FDG was contracted to provide master planning and design services for a major expansion of the Foot Locker European Service Center located in Heijen, The Netherlands. Planning issues for the project included identifying key operational and facility design requirements for the anticipated increase in facility size and throughput capacity. Available volume data was used as a baseline to develop business and inventory forecasting models for a seven-year planning horizon. Various schemes and budget estimates were developed for a series of potential alternative site plans and advanced material handling solutions.

The 90,000 SF addition to Foot Locker’s existing facility extends storage and distribution spaces with a high-bay storage configuration and pick mezzanines. New material handling systems allow for case and individual pick, minimizing labor in both operations. The new facility’s systems are designed to support rapid store growth and E-commerce initiatives, featuring:

  • High speed piece and carton sortation
  • Automated carton storage and retrieval
  • Extensive carton conveyance
  • Full integration with existing Warehouse Management System (WMS)
