FedEx

NEW DISTRIBUTION CENTER
Bedford Park, Illinois

In 2006, FedEx Ground selected FDG (TFG) to provide the architecture and engineering for its new 350,000 SF Distribution Hub in Bedford Park, Illinois. When complete, the facility will be the Main Hub for the Chicago-land area.

The new fully-automated distribution facility will also be home to the Regional Offices for FedEx staff. Additional building features and support areas on the site include an automated truck wash, new gateway, fuel-island and parking areas for both employees and delivery trucks.

To minimize the impact on daily operations during the construction of this project, FedEx selected a neighboring site to the distribution center to build the new facility. As the AE firm for the project, TFG assisted in the 56-acre land acquisition.

Sophisticated facilities with complex automated systems are FDG’s specialty. In order to deliver these facilities on time and on budget, consistency in communication and open collaboration between all participating firms and the client is essential.

For this project, FDG project team meets weekly with FedEx, the civil consultant and the construction teams. A significant advantage for FedEx is FDG’s comprehensive in-house architects and engineers. This team coordinates closely with each other as well as with the material handling contractor to ensure conveyor systems are properly integrated into the building design. The process is resulting in an improved project design, higher quality and minimizing disruptions to FedEx operations.
